An American Community: The American Widow Project

In honor of Memorial Day (May 31, 2011) the Today show had a touching television interview with Taryn Davis, the founder of The American Widow Project.   After losing her husband in Iraq in 2007, Taryn dealt with her grief by traveling around the US and listening to the stories of the other military widows.

Taryn Davis’ listening journey has grown into a non-profit organization dedicated to military widows, a documentary film and a wonderful website. To visit The American Widow Project website, click here

I was so moved by Taryn’s passion to create a community around her grief.  Here is how she describes The American Widow Project’s approach to events:

We do not hold seminars or have speakers, we have each other. The widows come together to enjoy life the way they did when their spouse was still alive. From surfing to ziplining, we are here to enjoy each other’s company and share some of our fondest memories.

About the Project (from its website):  The American Widow Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to the new generation of those who have lost the heroes of yesterday, today and tomorrow, with an emphasis on healing through sharing stories, tears and laughter………Military Widow to Military Widow

My heartfelt thanks to all of the families of those who have given their lives to keep our country free on Memorial Day.
