Marketing Tactics: Social Media Lesson in Outreach

Sometimes one extra small outreach (email, post, call) can make a big difference. Here’s a brief social marketing tactics success story.

Recently, Jim Butz, my partner, was preparing to be a judge for MiraCosta College’s Business and Entrepreneurship Center’s Young Entrepreneur Program (YEP) Pitch It! event.

So I published a post on his blog SoCalBuzz to give the Pitch It! event some additional attention.  Then while chatting with one of the organizers, James Young Hayes, I asked if he’d posted the event on a hot local site called, San Diego Tech Scene.

He hadn’t heard of the San Diego Tech Scene site and a few minutes later he clicked over to the site and posted Pitch It!

Jon Tucker, San Diego State University student and startup founder, checked out SDTechScene.org, found the Pitch It! event, entered and won the contest.

So that one extra call to me that organizer James Young Hayes placed, led to a tip about one more website to get the word out about the event.  And that’s how Pitch It! found it’s Young Entrepreneur Pitch It! 2011 winner.

Whether you’re pitching a startup, your newest product or service, your latest blog post or your favorite charity event. Take one more step.  Send one more email or make one more call.  You never know…

    One of our mantras is to be “Connecting early and often”… Reaching out in the community can make a huge difference, not just for those being touched, but for the company reaching out, as well.

      @Ray,

      I love it–“connect early and often” instead of “try to be closing sales early/often”. Community-building is the new selling??

      Thanks,
      Cynthia
